Fractionated Co2 Laser for Scars

Fractionated Co2 Laser for Scars

Fractional laser resurfacing has revolutionized the treatment of scars, especially in burn or keloid scars. The laser creates small channels that pass through the top epidermal layer of the skin and penetrates into the deep dermal layer where new skin cells, collagen and elastic fibers are created. However, by only injuring a “fraction” of the skin, the healthy tissue surrounding it quickly regenerates and replaces the damaged skin with new, softer, healthier skin. Not only does this allow for a quicker recovery time, but it also allows the heat from the laser to penetrate through the entire scar allowing the scar to soften. Similar to aerating your lawn, the laser removes a small portion of the skin, stimulating a healing response as it replaces it.

DEEP FX Laser creates laser microbeams up to 1mm deep into the skin.  At this level, acne scars, surgical scars, and superficial burn scars are effectively softened and flattened.  When treating pitted or indented scars, each penetration with the laser can assist in decreasing the size of depression.

SCAAR FX Laser (Synergistic Coagulation and Ablation for Advanced Resurfacing) provides the highest energy and deepest penetration available for remodeling scars. These settings are primarily used for keloid or burn scars.  Each laser microbeams can reach up to 4mm into the skin.  At this depth, it breaks down the scar tissue on the surface of the skin and stimulates a healing response from the dermal layers below. One of the most dramatic changes that occurs with energy at this depth, is the breakdown of the contractures that are often associated with scars; especially burn injuries.  This tightness often causes significant pain and limited range of motion that can be debilitating. With each laser session, the scar softens and the mobility increases.

Post Scar Treatment

Cortisone injections are often required for very thick scars to soften and flatten the scar tissue. It is also very effective in reducing the symptoms of pain and itching that can occur.  We have also found that massaging cortisone into the scar immediately following the laser treatment allows it to penetrate into the open channels, reaching the base of the scar without the need for multiple injections.
