Before and After

Common Causes of Earlobe Damage

Earlobe damage or alteration in shape can be caused by various factors, ranging from stretched piercings to sagging due to natural aging. Some common causes include:

  • Prolonged wear of heavy earrings
  • Multiple piercings too close together
  • Ear keloids
  • Ear gauging
  • Sudden trauma

No matter the cause, earlobe repair can help restore shape and strengthen tissue to achieve a more natural appearance.

Your Ears Are Unique & Can Change Over Time

The sides of your face are not twins. Instead, they’re like siblings while eyebrows and earlobes are often more like cousins—similar, but not identical. Earlobes often serve to express individuality by showcasing jewelry.

Earlobes vary according to genetic backgrounds and can be described as free or attached and pendulous or round. Piercings can also vary from traditional to gauge, all of which can prove challenging to maintain as we mature.

With time, skin loses its elasticity which often leads to a more mature appearance. As styles or job requirements change, earlobe rejuvenation may become appealing.

Combination Therapy for Earlobe Repair: Laser & Fillers

Combination therapy can offer multiple solutions to restore, rejuvenate, or restructure earlobes.

Laser Repair

Laser treatment is used to excise earlobe tissue with little to no bleeding or discomfort. A tiny needle is used to freeze the earlobe prior to surgically excising the tissue to repair torn piercings, restructure gauge earlobe piercings, and reduce undesirable pendulous earlobes.

The advantage to laser earlobe repair is its ability to offer less swelling, less bruising, and a faster recovery time. Patients can go home with tiny sutures that are removed in 10–14 days. The earlobes can often be re-pierced within a few months of repair.

Fillers

Fillers can be used to help reshape earlobes following a laser repair procedure. Fillers can also be used to help rejuvenate and reshape sagging earlobes that have lost volume over time.

With the filler procedure, topical numbing cream is used prior to injecting filler with a tiny needle into the earlobe. There is virtually no downtime and results can be enjoyed instantly.

Surgical Earlobe Repair Procedure

Surgical earlobe repair is designed to help address these issues effectively and efficiently. The minimally invasive process involves removing excess skin and tissue, allowing our dermatologists to reshape your earlobe and restore its natural appearance. Depending on your individual needs, permanent or absorbable sutures may be used for skin closure.

Our team uses different approaches based on the extent of the damage. Whether it’s a simple repair or more extensive restructuring, we’re dedicated to delivering results that can truly make a difference for you.

We start with a consultation to understand your needs and expectations. We’ll discuss your medical history and complete a physical exam. This also helps us determine a suitable approach for your specific situation.

On the day of the procedure, we apply local anesthesia to numb your earlobe. Your physician will then carefully remove the excess skin and tissue. The procedure usually takes 30 minutes, depending on the revision needed.

After the procedure, we’ll provide you with clear instructions for care. It’s common to experience minor swelling, which can last up to 1 week. Recovery is typically quick, with most patients returning to their normal activities within a few days.

Can You Re-Pierce Repaired Earlobes?

Re-piercing your earlobe is possible, depending on the reason for the repair and the healing process. Wait until complete recovery, typically around 3 months after the initial procedure. To help minimize complications, a new piercing should be discussed at your consultation.
