For those of you spending a lot of time by the pool or at the beach this summer, we hope you’ve been packing hats, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen. Chances are, you’ve forgotten once or twice and gotten a sunburn. Keep reading for some quick DIY remedies to help remove the sting out of that burn.

Then, keep reading for a reminder about how exposure to the sun, and resulting sunburns, can increase your risk of skin cancer. Be careful and practice safe sun practices! If you have a mole that is new or changing, call us for a consultation right away.

So you’ve got a bad sunburn. What can you do about it right now? Try:

Witch Hazel

This gentle liquid is useful for many ailments like swelling and bruising. But, did you know that it’s also good for sunburn? Witch Hazel contains tannins, which can help bruises heal faster, swelling go down, and encourage your skin to heal itself. Soak a cotton pad with some witch hazel and swipe it over your sunburn to help your skin feel better.

Cool Shower/Bath

Getting out of the heat will help you treat sunburn. Consider taking a cool shower or bath to help remove the heat from your skin. It might even help you sleep better at night.

Stay Hydrated with Water

Your skin needs to be properly hydrated to repair itself, so grab a big glass of water as soon as you notice a sunburn. Staying hydrated will also help you feel better in the case of a particularly nasty burn.

Did you know that getting multiple bad sunburns during your lifetime can increase your risk of developing skin cancer later down the road? Sun damage from UV exposure can alter your DNA, causing your chances of developing deadly melanoma to rise. Protect yourself from damaging UV rays, and make sure to check moles regularly for signs of change.

Acne is one of those issues that seems to stick around for way too long. Stubborn acne that lasts through your twenties and thirties can bring up all sorts of issues, but one of the biggest we’ve found is worries about being in a swimsuit.

If you’re worried about wearing a swimsuit in front of friends and family, it’s time to chat. This hot summer should be enjoyed by a pool or on a beach, not hidden away inside. Keep reading to learn about ways you can treat those leftover acne scars and get back into fun summer mode.

Heal Your Acne

While it might seem easier said than done, healing your acne will help you avoid new scarring. So, while it’s not necessary, it is preferable that your acne is under control before you go down the road of healing your scars.

When it comes to acne and bacne, you need to know when you’re helping and when you’re causing more harm. Our recommendation is try switching up products (you never know if that old face wash has been helping your skin break out all this time), and be deliberate about healing your skin. Try a more gentle, minimal skincare regime; drink lots of water; and consider adding more vitamin-rich foods that your skin needs into your diet.

Banish Scars

Resurfacing treatments can help minimize signs of acne scars on the face or body. It’s important to be realistic and, since every situation is different, to discuss what to expect with your provider.

During laser skin resurfacing, a laser is used to remove top layers of the skin, revealing more youthful skin underneath. The most damaged, scarred layers are removed, which can help minimize signs of scarring, especially if you opt for multiple treatments.

Keep in mind that deep pitted scarring is difficult to remove completely, so those scars may remain as a less noticeable scar. If you have mild pitted scarring, consider asking about our M22 ResurFX laser. If you have red scarring then Vascular/IPL Laser Treatments might be better for you. Remember to inform your provider of any treatments you’ve had recently and if you’ve used Accutane within the last year before you have your treatment.
