Can Vascular Birthmarks Be Removed?

Request a Consultation

You might notice a red or purple mark on your skin that’s been there since birth or appeared shortly after. These marks can affect your confidence and make you wonder about treatment options. Whether it’s a raised, bright red spot or a flat, wine-coloured patch, these marks result from abnormal blood vessel development.

Yes, these marks can be effectively treated and often removed using modern laser technology, though the approach depends on the specific type of birthmark you have. Modern dermatology offers targeted solutions that address the underlying blood vessel abnormalities causing these distinctive marks.

Many parents ask whether red or purple birthmarks can be treated — and the answer depends on the type of birthmark. These marks are caused by differences in how blood vessels developed before or shortly after birth. The two most common vascular birthmarks are port-wine birthmarks (capillary malformations) and infantile hemangiomas, and they behave very differently.

Hemangiomas vs Port Wine Birthmarks

Hemangiomas develop as benign tumors caused by an overgrowth of blood vessels. These marks appear in about 4.5% of children and occur more frequently in premature babies. They can be superficial (flat and bright red), deep (appearing dark red or blue under the skin), or mixed with characteristics of both types.

Port wine birthmarks form differently. They result from abnormal blood vessel development during fetal growth. These marks appear as flat, red to purple patches that don’t raise above the skin surface.

The key difference lies in their behaviour over time. Hemangiomas can grow rapidly and may eventually shrink on their own, while port wine birthmarks remain stable in size but never disappear without treatment.

When These Marks Appear

Only 30% of hemangiomas are present at birth. The rest develop within the first few weeks of life, often darkening and becoming more prominent as children grow. These birthmarks go through 3 distinct stages: rapid growth, stabilization, and gradual shrinking over several years.

Port wine birthmarks always appear at birth and remain throughout your lifetime. Without treatment, they can gradually thicken, darken, and develop small bubble-like formations as you age.

Treatment Options for Different Birthmark Types

Hemangioma Treatment Approaches

For rapidly growing hemangiomas, dermatologists often prescribe oral medications such as Propranolol as first-line treatment. This medication can help shrink the blood vessels and reduce the size of the birthmark. Topical Timolol may be used for smaller, less aggressive cases.

Treatment using targeted laser therapy serves as an excellent additional treatment option. Even when hemangiomas shrink naturally, they often leave behind excess fatty tissue and surface blood vessels. Early laser treatment helps minimize the formation of residual tissue.

Infantile hemangiomas are different. They are not always visible at birth and usually appear within the first 1–3 weeks of life. They typically grow most rapidly during the first 3–6 months, may continue enlarging up to 9–12 months in some cases, then enter a stabilization phase around the end of the first year. After that, they gradually begin to shrink and fade on their own. Unlike port-wine birthmarks, many hemangiomas will resolve without any treatment, although this process can take several years (often by 3–5 years of age, with continued slow improvement up to 7–10 years).

When treatment is required, medical therapy is typically the first-line approach. However, vascular laser can be introduced as an adjunctive therapy to help speed resolution, reduce surface redness, and optimize the final cosmetic outcome.

Port Wine Birthmark Treatment

Targeted laser treatment stands as the primary and most effective approach for port wine birthmarks. These marks don’t respond to oral or topical medications, making laser therapy your main option for improvement.

Early treatment helps produce the most dramatic results. Ideally, treatment begins within the first few weeks of life when the blood vessels are smaller and easier to target. Older birthmarks can still be treated, but may require more sessions to achieve noticeable improvement.

Port-wine birthmarks are present right at birth. They appear as flat pink, red, or purple patches that will not resolve without treatment. In fact, they often darken or thicken over time if untreated, which is why early intervention offers the best opportunity for optimal improvement. Treatment can safely begin within the first few weeks of life.

At Remington Laser Dermatology Centre, we use state-of-the-art vascular lasers, including Vbeam PDL 595nm and DermaV 523nm. These technologies deliver precise pulses of energy that gently heat and seal abnormal blood vessels. Treatments are performed safely in an outpatient setting and typically take only a few minutes.

How Laser Technology Removes Birthmarks

Modern lasers use specific light wavelengths that target hemoglobin in blood vessels. The laser energy heats and seals the problematic vessels, causing them to collapse and eventually be absorbed by your body. This precise targeting protects surrounding healthy tissue.

Different laser systems work for different birthmark types. PDL (pulsed dye laser) and other specialized systems can constrict blood vessels and reduce their visibility at the skin’s surface.

Treatment Process & What to Expect

Your treatment session typically lasts 15–60 minutes, depending on the size and location of your birthmark. The medical team will provide you with protective eyewear and apply local numbing agents to keep you comfortable during the procedure.

You’ll feel a prickly sensation as the laser handpiece moves over your skin. The specialized equipment allows precise control over depth and intensity, helping provide safe and effective treatment for your specific condition.

Recovery & Results After Treatment

Immediate Post-Treatment Effects

Right after treatment, your skin may feel warm and appear flushed, similar to a post-workout flush. Some prominent vessels may bruise or form small welts that look like mosquito bites. These effects are normal and expected responses to the laser energy.

You might experience moderate swelling for 24–72 hours, especially around delicate areas like the eyes. Over-the-counter antihistamines can help minimize this swelling if needed.

Healing Timeline & Final Results

Most initial healing occurs within the first few days. Any bruising or surface changes typically resolve within 5–7 days. You can see your complete results in about 3–4 weeks once all healing is finished.

Multiple treatment sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart often provide the most comprehensive results. Your dermatologist will determine the exact number of sessions based on your birthmark’s size, depth, and response to treatment.

Why Professional Assessment Matters

A dermatologist-led evaluation helps distinguish between hemangiomas and port wine birthmarks to create the most effective treatment plan for your specific condition. This professional assessment determines whether you need medication, laser therapy, or a combination approach.

Timing can be important for treatment success. Rapidly growing hemangiomas requiring immediate medical intervention affect about 10% of cases. Port wine birthmarks benefit significantly from early treatment, while cosmetic concerns that affect your daily life deserve prompt professional attention, regardless of the birthmark type.

With our extensive knowledge and experience in treating vascular birthmarks, our dermatologist-led team carefully evaluates each case to determine the most appropriate and effective treatment plan for every patient and family.

If you’re dealing with a birthmark that affects your confidence or quality of life, Remington Laser Dermatology Centre offers modern treatment options tailored to your specific needs. Schedule your consultation today to learn how modern laser technology can help address your concerns.
