Treatment options for keloid scars

Request a Consultation
Keloid scars can be hard to treat as they cannot be surgical removed but keloid scars can be flattened using laser at our dermatology in Calgary

Unusually large, raised, or puckered scars that develop at the site of a past trauma or wound in the skin may be diagnosed as a keloid scar. Keloid scars can actually develop anywhere on the body and skin, though they are commonly found on areas such as the ears, cheeks, chest, and shoulders. These non-cancerous, benign scars are not only unsightly but can become painful and itchy.

What causes a keloid scar to form?

It is currently unclear as to why keloid scars form on some patients and not others, though studies show that there may be a family history or genetics associated with the development of these growths. It has also been found through research that individuals who have darker skin tones and ethnicities are at a higher risk of developing keloid scars. In rare cases, patients may develop keloid scars where no trauma or wound has been developed, making it complicated to pin down the source or cause.

How do I  know if I have a keloid scar?

Dermatologists work with many different skin disorders and conditions that are seen on a regular basis, so getting a definitive diagnosis of your skin growth is the first step in learning more. Patients who have been diagnosed with keloid scars will often find that they have a wide range of treatment options available, especially with our team at Remington Laser Dermatology Centre.
