At Remington Laser Dermatology Centre, we provide a services for new and existing patients who are dealing with chronic and excessive sweating. This condition, also known as “hyperhidrosis,” is a medical issue that can become extremely bothersome. Patients may experience continued and severe sweating of the underarms, hands, and feet. Men and women who deal with hyperhidrosis often find themselves wearing darker clothing to reduce the appearance of excess sweat, or avoid social situations altogether. Drs. Todd Remington and Kent Remington of the Calgary, AB area want to help these individuals by getting them a proper diagnosis and educating them on the benefits of Botox injections.

What is Botox?

Many patients think of antiaging when they hear the brand “Botox.” However, Botox is a medication that has been used for years in a variety of different medical uses. For example, not only does it reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds when injected into the muscles of the face, but it is also used for the treatment of cervical dystonia, chronic migraines, and an overactive bladder. This medication is formulated with botulinum toxin type A and is classified as a neuromodulator. When Botox is injected into the areas where excessive sweating has been a concern, it can provide results within days that will last several months. The results are not permanent, however, so reinjection is needed regularly to keep the skin dry. Patients who use Botox injections alongside professional-strength antiperspirants will find the most relief from their condition.

What other treatments are available?

While there are other treatments available on the market, including surgery, the only option at our practice is that of Botox injections. Many patients find that this conservative, minimally-invasive method works great at addressing the condition without patients requiring surgery.

Todd and Kent Remington offer important screenings that should be performed on an annual basis. Skin cancer screening is often overlooked but incredibly important for patients in and around the community of Calgary, AB.

What is skin cancer?

With routine exposure of sunlight, skin can develop cancerous cells which can become a serious problem. Skin cancer is one of the more common types of cancers, but is also the easiest to diagnose and treat if caught in the early stages. Skin cancer affects the largest organ of the body, and can provide visual signs. Patients who have moles that are changing in shape, size, and color may want to be examined for skin cancer. Patients who have skin cancer may also notice other skin growths or wounds that do not heal as they should.

How can I find out if I have skin cancer?

Patients with unusual skin growths or changes in their moles will want to schedule an appointment as soon as possible with a dermatologist for an evaluation. If the area looks suspicious, the doctor will perform a biopsy, where a sample of the growth is removed and sent to a laboratory for further examination. If skin cancer cells are present, the doctor will discuss treatment options with the patient.

What can I expect during my skin cancer screening?

Patients are advised to schedule a yearly visit at Remington Laser Dermatology Centre for full a full evaluation known as a skin cancer screening. During this appointment, the doctor will examine the patient carefully from head to toe to look for signs of possible skin cancer. Any areas of concern are biopsied and tested to check for cancerous cells. The appointment can take approximately one hour or less to complete.

When it comes to cosmetic concerns of the face and body, many patients want a wide range of options to choose from. They often learn that dermatologists have many ways to address common issues without the need for cosmetic or reconstructive plastic surgery. Patients with a “double chin,” medically known as “submental fullness,” may feel self-conscious about socializing with others or hopping into that holiday photo with friends and families. However, thanks to continued advances in dermatology, patients can now reduce the appearance of the double chin with injectables such as Belkyra.

What is Belkyra?

Drs. Todd and Kent Remington of Remington Laser Dermatology Centre are dermatologists who describe Belkyra as a non-surgical approach to submental fullness. Instead of undergoing surgical procedures to liposuction excess fat and cut away the skin for a firm chin and jowl, patients can now seek treatment with simple injections done right in their office. Belkyra uses an acid called deoxycholic acid which is injected immediately into submental fat to reduce the amount of fat and the size of the fat cells gradually over time. The result? A naturally improved jaw and jowl line and reduced submental fullness.

How do I know if Belkyra is right for me?

The best candidates are those who have mild to moderate submental fullness and are seeking a nonsurgical option for treatment. While diet and exercise can often reduce fat elsewhere on the body, the fat underneath the chin is stubborn and difficult to target directly. Patients who want to reduce their submental fullness and are willing to commit to the necessary appointments to do so may be considered a patient that qualifies for treatment. This is discussing during the initial consultation appointment and patient evaluation with our team.

Men and women who have asymmetry or defects of the nose area may feel self-conscious about their overall appearance. A nose that is not in balance and harmony with the face may impact one’s look, and without a thought, most individuals think the only way to fix this is with plastic surgery. While a rhinoplasty procedure may help with more severe cases of an imperfect nose, it’s not the only way to make minor changes to the shape and size. With the use of dermal fillers, Drs. Todd and Kent Remington of Calgary, AB can provide nose reshaping without invasive procedures.

How is the nose reshaped with dermal fillers?

To best understand this treatment, patients should be aware as to how dermal fillers work. Dermal fillers are injectable gels that are administered through needles in specific areas. With the assistance of a skilled injector, patients can relax as this hyaluronic gel treatment is injected into the nose areas requiring improved contours and shaping.  Dermal fillers are safe, affordable, and reliable, and can be reinjected as needed over time to maintain the results..

Who is a candidate for nose reshaping with dermal fillers?

The best candidate for this treatment are men and women who are unhappy with the appearance of the nose. However, patients who have minor changes they would like to make can avoid surgery and instead consider the benefits of nose reshaping with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can be used to help provide improved balance to the face’s symmetry, straighten out humps along the bridge of the nose, or fix the shape, size, and volume of the nose tip. All of these concerns may be addressed with dermal fillers, eliminating surgical interventions which can be costly, require extensive downtime, and which may result in visible scarring. Skip the surgery and instead, ask our team about nose reshaping with dermal fillers.

So you have a tattoo on your skin that you either a) hate, or b) regret. If this sounds like you, you may be wondering what your options are for removal. While most patients believe that tattoos are permanent, there is one way to successfully remove them: laser tattoo removal.

What is laser tattoo removal?

Laser tattoo removal is a specialized treatment available at Remington Laser Dermatology Centre in Calgary, AB. Drs. Todd and Kent Remington are providers who can use laser light to target tattoo ink in the skin and break it down, reducing its appearance treatment after treatment. With routine sessions, patients can fade their tattoo away and get rid of it—permanently.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser light that penetrates into the skin will break down the ink used in the tattoo. The ink is then naturally absorbed by the body and skin and flushed out through the lymphatic system. This does not happen immediately. Instead, the process takes time and several treatment sessions to complete. Our professionals will help patients determine how long it can take to fully remove their tattoo. There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration, including the quality of the tattoo ink, the colors in the tattoo, and how long the tattoo has been in place.

Am I a candidate?

To determine candidacy for this and any other treatments at Remington Laser Dermatology Centre, patients in the community need to schedule a consultation with our providers for a full evaluation and to discuss their skincare goals.

While it’s not uncommon to sweat after extensive exercise or time spent outdoors on a hot day, it is a concern when sweating occurs all the time. This may be a sign of a condition known as hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be an embarrassing condition for men and women. The condition can cause patients to feel self-conscious about sweating in certain social situations. This condition can also cause patients to regularly stain their clothes and reconsider wearing specific colored clothing that may show sweat easier than others. However, hyperhidrosis does not have to negatively impact your life! With treatment at Remington Laser Dermatology Centre, patients have options available to them to consider.

How is hyperhidrosis treated?

At Remington Laser Dermatology Centre, we are pleased to offer an affordable and reliable option through injections of Botox. While most patients think of Botox as an anti-aging solution, it can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is caused by overactive sweat glands. When Botox, a neuromodulator, is injected into these areas, it can reduce the chemical messenger known as acetylcholine, which causes the stimulation of sweat glands. When the stimulation from the chemical messenger is not received, the sweat will not occur.

How long will treatment last?

Botox is not a permanent solution to hyperhidrosis in the same was as surgical intervention can be. Instead, Botox provides a temporary option that will last several months. To maintain the results, patients will need to visit Remington Laser Dermatology Centre on a regular basis to have injections completed. With routine injections, most patients can keep their hyperhidrosis under control and live their life without the embarrassment of sweat stains!

Is Botox right for me?

The best way to determine if Botox injections can help you with your condition is to schedule a consultation and initial evaluation with our team. With a proper diagnosis and evaluation, our doctors can make the best recommendations for patients.

At Remington Laser Dermatology Centre, we see patients in our practice who are bothered by birthmarks that are present on their skin. While birthmarks are benign and often appear at or shortly after birth, they can be very large or in locations where they may be more of a cosmetic concern than a medical concern. In cases where patients are seeking removal, Drs. Todd and Kent Remington can evaluate a patient and make a recommendation for treatment.

What types of birthmarks are commonly seen on patients?

There are two varieties of birthmarks including vascular and pigmented. Vascular birthmarks often appear due to blood vessel malformations, while pigmentated birthmarks are due to excess pigmentation cells in the area.

Vascular birthmarks
Vascular birthmarks include:

  • Salmon patches – these birthmarks are light pink and red and often appear on the face. They may become darker when the blood vessels dilate, such as during crying. These may also develop at the nape of the neck and may be known as “stork bites” at birth.
  • Infantile hemangioma – an infantile hemangioma often develops at birth and is a strawberry red birthmark that protrudes from the skin. Most of these will flatten on their own over the first year of life.
  • Port wine stain – a large flat patch of dark red or purple skin with well-defined borders may be diagnosed as a port wine stain. These will not fade, and instead may become darker with age.

Pigmented birthmarks

    • Pigmented birthmarks include:
  • Café-au-lait spots – light brown patches on the skin that appears oval in shape and ranges in size may be diagnosed as a café-au-lait spot.
  • Mongolian spots – while these spots may appear in dark-skinned babies and look like bruised areas, they are not caused by trauma and do not hurt. These develop typically on the back and bottoms of babies of African-American, Asian, or Hispanic ethnicities and will fade away over several years in most instances.
